Description

This print depicts an evening moon (yūzuki) scene, a recurring atmospheric subject in Kiyochika's kōsen-ga repertoire. Likely rendered in an ōban horizontal format, the composition exploits the contrast between the pale luminosity of the moon and the surrounding dark sky, using graded bokashi in the sky blocks to dissolve the boundary between moonlight and shadow. Kiyochika's Western-influenced chiaroscuro is evident in the diffuse halo of light encircling the moon, a technique with no direct precedent in the Hiroshige tradition. Whether the moon rises over water, rooftops, or a wooded hillside, the print belongs to a body of work in which Kiyochika treats nocturnal light as the primary subject rather than the landscape behind it. The washi ground deepens the visual sensation of darkness against which the luminous orb floats.
