Description
Titled (入浴二美人), 'Two Beauties Bathing,' this print places Kiyochika in the bijin-ga genre—depictions of beautiful women—which, while not his primary subject matter, he treated on occasion throughout his career. The bathing subject allowed for a treatment of the female body within the domestic interior, drawing on a tradition including Utamaro's partial or suggested undress compositions. Kiyochika's approach would have emphasized the spatial and lighting qualities of the bathhouse or private washing chamber—the steam, the gleam of water on skin, the warm interior light—rather than purely formal display. The two-figure composition creates the possibility of interaction or narrative between the subjects, distinguishing it from the single-figure bijin-ga format and suggesting a genre-scene dimension alongside the purely aesthetic interest in the female form.
