Description

This print depicts a young girl (kommusume), a figure type that sits at the intersection of bijin-ga portraiture and the genre scenes of ordinary Meiji life that Kiyochika explored outside his landscape work. Unlike the idealized courtesans of earlier woodblock bijin-ga, Kiyochika's female subjects often appear in contemporary dress—Western-influenced clothing mixed with traditional garments—reflecting the hybrid visual culture of 1870s and 1880s Tokyo. The composition likely places the figure against a relatively plain ground or domestic interior, with the lighting effect—a warm lamp glow or cool exterior light—used to model the face and kimono in a manner indebted to Western portraiture more than to Utamaro. The print demonstrates Kiyochika's ability to apply his kōsen-ga lighting principles to the figure as well as to landscape.
