Description

This oban-format print depicts the view from Edobashi bridge at dusk, with Mount Fuji visible in the distance against a fading sky. Kiyochika uses his characteristic kōsen-ga technique to render the gradations of twilight over the river, employing bokashi to blend orange and violet tones across the horizon. The composition places the bridge in the foreground while the silhouette of Fuji anchors the far distance, a structural approach that balances Edo-period compositional conventions with Western atmospheric perspective. The Kanda River visible beneath the bridge would have been a center of commercial activity in Meiji Tokyo, lending the scene a quality of urban transition—the ancient landmark framing a city in rapid change.
