Description
From the series Musashi Hyakkei (Hundred Views of Musashi), this print depicts Ikegami Honmonji, a major Nichiren Buddhist temple in the Ōta district of Tokyo established at the site where Nichiren is said to have died in 1282. The temple complex, with its main hall, pagoda, and wooded grounds, provided a subject combining architectural forms with natural surroundings — a contrast to the urban waterscapes that dominate much of Kiyochika's output. The Musashi series expanded his scope beyond central Tokyo to encompass the broader historic landscape of the Kantō region. Ikegami Honmonji's association with Nichiren pilgrimage and its annual autumn festival made it a recognized destination that would have carried familiar associations for a Meiji-era Tokyo audience.
