Description
This sheet from the Nippon Banzai: Hyakusen Hyakushō series bears the caption 'Thick-Skinned Face' — a Japanese idiom for shamelessness or brazen impudence — attributed to the pen name Honekawa Dōjin, one of Kiyochika's satirical pseudonyms. Published during the First Sino-Japanese War, the print likely caricatures a Chinese official or military figure whose arrogance or denial of defeat is the subject of mockery. The caricature tradition in this series draws on earlier Japanese giga (comic picture) conventions, applying exaggerated physiognomy and theatrical gesture to topical military subjects. Kiyochika adapted these traditions into a format suitable for mass distribution, using simplified woodblock printing with bold contour lines and flat color areas rather than the nuanced gradations of his earlier kosen-ga landscapes. The satirical caption anchors the visual joke for audiences following newspaper reports of Chinese defeats.
