Description

From 'Nihon Banzai! Hyakusen Hyakushō,' the subtitle 'Isamashii kodomo asobi' (勇ましい子供遊び, 'Brave Children's Play') likely presents a dual satirical reading: Qing military efforts reduced to the status of children's games, or alternatively, Japanese children's play imitating military exercises as evidence of innate martial spirit even in youth. Both readings sustain the series' propagandistic purpose — the first by deflating the Qing military's pretensions, the second by celebrating Japanese warrior culture as natural from childhood. Kiyochika's graphic economy in these broadsheets — bold outlines, flat color areas, exaggerated figural poses — suited the rapid production cycle of popular war-era publishing. The 'Bone-Skin Hermit' pen name underscored the sardonic register separating these sheets from Kiyochika's more prestigious atmospheric print work.
