The construction satirizes some Chinese ruse or defensive stratagem — the supposed cleverness of quick wit deployed to hold territory or protect supplies — and likely depicts the attempt backfiring through incompetence. Redirecting a familiar domestic trope into military caricature was characteristic of the series' irreverent register. Kiyochika's composition probably shows Chinese figures attempting a trick or scheme in a state of comic futility, rendered in the bold outline style he developed for this sequence. Verses by Kotsuhi Dōjin (Inoue Tankei) appear alongside, extending the joke through kyōka-style wordplay. The ōban-format print was issued with a limited color palette from multiple woodblocks, prioritizing legible caricature over the atmospheric tonal complexity of Kiyochika's earlier kōsen-ga work.
