Description
A print from the Nihon Banzai: Hyakusen Hyakushō series, this sheet bears the subtitle 'Nihei no ichinen' (A Japanese Soldier's Burning Zeal, or A Single Flame of the Japanese Soldier), likely depicting a Japanese infantryman in a moment of aggressive action — setting fire to an enemy position, a structure, or supply stores. Kiyochika's caricature style in this series relies on exaggerated posture and expression to convey martial confidence, contrasting the composed Japanese figure against comically rendered opposition. The composition would employ the flat, saturated color planes characteristic of the series, with strong block-printed outlines providing graphic clarity suited to mass distribution. Produced during the height of public enthusiasm for the Meiji military campaign against Qing China, these prints were printed in large editions for affordable sale. The 'ichinen' of the title plays on the dual meaning of 'flame' and 'determination,' a verbal pun typical of Kotsuhi Dōjin's approach to political satire.
