Description
The caption 'The Burden of Mukden' refers to Fengtian Prefecture (奉天府), the Qing administrative capital of Manchuria centered on the city of Mukden (modern Shenyang). This print from the Nippon Banzai: Hyakusen Hyakushō series, published under Honekawa Dōjin during the First Sino-Japanese War, likely satirizes Chinese officials or soldiers burdened with the problems — military, logistical, or political — accumulating around the Manchurian theater of the war. The visual pun on 'burden' (荷厄介, literally a heavy, troublesome load) may be rendered literally as a figure collapsing under an oversized bundle, a standard giga device. Two prints in the Hanga collection share this title, suggesting Kiyochika issued multiple compositions on the Mukden theme. The series' flat color and bold outline technique enabled rapid turnaround from design to distribution, keeping pace with news from the front.
