Description
Sheet forty-five from the series 'Kyōdō Risshi Ki' (教道立志基, Foundations for Establishing Moral Ambition), placing it toward the latter portion of the numbered sequence. Like others in the set, this print addresses themes of personal discipline, historical exemplars, or conduct appropriate to the Meiji state's civic program. The series title — combining moral teaching (教道) with the aspiration to establish oneself (立志) — signals its role in the period's widespread effort to shape public character through popular media. Kiyochika's work in didactic illustration drew on conventions from Edo-period narrative prints while adapting them to Meiji subjects and printing sensibilities, balancing informational legibility with visual engagement.
