Description
Number thirty-two in the Kyōdō Risshi no Motoi series, this print shares its number with the series entry for Oda Nobunaga (kobayashi-kiyochika--100), indicating either a variant impression from a different edition run or a compositional revision issued in a subsequent printing. Comparing the two prints with the same series number reveals how the Meiji publishing industry reprinted and adapted popular didactic series, sometimes revising compositions to suit changing pedagogical or aesthetic preferences. Kiyochika's handling of the figure would employ the restrained palette and clean compositional framing characteristic of the series, distinguishing it from the atmospheric light effects of his landscape work. Its existence alongside the kobayashi-kiyochika--100 impression makes it a useful object for studying the material history of Meiji print publication.
