Description
Number thirty-one in the Kyōdō Risshi no Motoi series, this print shares its number designation with the series entry for Tokugawa Takechiyo (kobayashi-kiyochika--93), suggesting this may be a variant printing or second edition impression of that subject. Alternatively, the series may have been issued across multiple publication runs with compositional revisions between editions. The figure depicted — whether Takechiyo or a closely related subject — would be rendered in the measured, tonal style Kiyochika employed throughout the series, using controlled [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradation to model form without the full atmospheric lighting he developed in his Tokyo views. The print stands as material evidence of how the series circulated through Meiji publishing networks, where popular moral education texts were regularly reprinted in updated formats.
