Description
This first print in the series 「鹿児嶋英雄伝」 (Tales of Heroes of Kagoshima) presents scenes or figures from the Satsuma Rebellion of 1877, the last armed uprising against the Meiji government, led by former imperial loyalist Saigo Takamori. Despite the rebellion's official suppression, popular sympathy for the Satsuma fighters—experienced samurai resisting the dissolution of their class—sustained a substantial market for print imagery romanticizing the conflict. Kiyochika adapted the [musha-e](/glossary/musha-e) (warrior picture) genre to contemporary military subjects, combining the dynamic figure compositions of earlier battle-scene printmakers with his own interest in dramatic lighting effects: firelight, muzzle flash, or torchlight integrated into scenes of close combat. The series would have been published in installments, each sheet presenting a named episode or officer. This first print likely establishes the series visually, possibly with a large-figure confrontation or a key early engagement of the rebellion.
