Description
This second print from the 「鹿児嶋英雄伝」 series continues the serial documentation of the Satsuma Rebellion, presenting another named hero or significant engagement from the 1877 conflict. Serialized battle-print series of this kind were structured to sustain audience interest across multiple purchases, typically alternating between portrait-style images of individual commanders and action scenes of named engagements. Kiyochika's contribution to this tradition brought an intensified attention to chiaroscuro: the confined terrain of Kyushu's mountain passes and fortifications provided settings where torchlight, rifle fire, or the reflected light of burning structures could generate the dramatic tonal contrasts characteristic of his kosen-ga approach. The figures in such prints are typically named in cartouche labels, giving them the commemorative function of a monument as much as the narrative function of reportage. The washi surface and layered pigments of the woodblock medium would carry both the deep darks of night scenes and the saturated reds of Satsuma uniform details.
