Description

This print from the Hana Moyō series depicts a woman in costume associated with the Tenpō era (1830–1844), one of the later Edo period's most visually distinctive fashion moments despite—or because of—the Tenpō Reforms, which placed sumptuary restrictions on luxury textiles. Women's wear of the Tenpō period featured refined, subdued color palettes with sophisticated use of stripes, small repeated motifs, and restrained kasuri patterns as alternatives to the bold dyed designs of earlier periods. Kiyochika's attention to the specific aesthetic vocabulary of the period makes the Hana Moyō series a visual taxonomy of Edo fashion history. The figure's pose, hair ornaments, and accessory details would all contribute period-specific markers distinguishing this print from the others in the series.
