Description
This untitled Kiyochika print demonstrates his approach to depicting urban or semi-rural Tokyo through the organizing principle of light rather than geography. Unlike the Hiroshige topographic tradition, where named landmarks anchor the viewer's orientation, Kiyochika's compositions often leave the specific location secondary to the quality of illumination at a particular time of day or weather condition. Snow scenes, which appear throughout his oeuvre, present a particular opportunity for this approach: the white of the [washi](/glossary/washi) paper itself can stand in for snow cover, requiring the printer to leave those areas unprinted while building surrounding tone through careful block registration. The compression of the scene into a narrow tonal register — close values of grey, blue, and white — is characteristic of his winter prints.
