Description
A companion print to the Enpō-era (1673–1681) entry in the 「花模様」 series, this design presents a second floral pattern from the same two-decade interval. The repetition of era designations across the series suggests that Kiyochika or the series publisher selected multiple exemplary designs from each period to convey the range of pattern possibilities available within a single historical moment. Enpō textile design occupies a point of equilibrium in Edo-period aesthetics: neither the bold singularity of early Edo compositions nor the dense complexity of Genroku excess. The pattern documented here likely shows floral arrangement in a formal repeat or scattered placement, rendered with color registers appropriate to the period's dye palette. Together with its companion, this print provides a comparative view of Enpō decorative design that a single example could not convey.
