Description
The earliest chronological entry in the 「花模様」 series, this print documents a floral pattern associated with the Keichō era (1596–1615), the transitional moment between the Azuchi-Momoyama period and the establishment of Tokugawa rule. Keichō design reflects a late Momoyama aesthetic at its most confident — vivid, high-contrast compositions frequently incorporating gold or deep-ground contrasts, monumental floral forms, and an opulence associated with the patronage of powerful warlords and wealthy merchants. Kosode textiles surviving from this period often feature bold peony, chrysanthemum, or paulownia motifs executed in embroidery, surihaku, or tsujigahana techniques. Kiyochika's woodblock rendering translates this design legacy into the printmaking medium, establishing the earliest historical point in the series' trajectory and making visible the stylistic distance between the Keichō aesthetic and the more restrained patterns that would develop under sustained Tokugawa governance.
