Description
This print belongs to the series [Ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e) Ruikō no Uchi (Within a Classification of Ukiyo-e Pictures), in which Kiyochika illustrates historical episodes corresponding to the periods that gave rise to the ukiyo-e tradition. This entry depicts a scene from the Earlier Nine Years' War (Zenkunen no Eki, 1051–1062), the conflict between Minamoto no Yoriyoshi and the Abe clan in the northeast. The composition likely features armored warriors in a battlefield or stronghold setting, rendered in the [nishiki-e](/glossary/nishiki-e) polychrome technique with strong ink outlines and flat color passages characteristic of historical warrior prints. Kiyochika adapts his draftsmanship to a more archaic visual register appropriate to the Heian-period subject matter.
