Description

This print is a component of the 教導立志基 (Kyōdō Risshi Ki) series, Kiyochika's multi-part set of educational prints portraying historical figures as models of virtue and perseverance for Meiji-era readers. The series was published in numbered installments, each featuring one or two figures with accompanying biographical text. The subject depicted in this plate — drawn from the roster of Japanese scholars, poets, warriors, or officials the series catalogued — would be shown in clothing and setting consistent with their historical period, with compositional emphasis on the characteristic deed or circumstance that made them an instructional model. Kiyochika's familiarity with both indigenous and Western pictorial conventions allowed him to render historical costume with specificity while deploying spatial depth in ways that distinguished Meiji-era educational illustration from Edo-period precedents.
