Description
The final of the unnumbered 教導立志基 (Kyōdō Risshi Ki) prints in this group, this sheet continues Kiyochika's illustrated survey of historical Japanese exemplars commissioned for Meiji educational purposes. The series reflects the broader Meiji project of nationalizing historical memory by selecting and circulating approved models of virtue drawn from Japanese history. Kiyochika's visual treatment would favor clarity of figure and setting over the atmospheric complexity of his landscape work, with color passages supporting narrative legibility. The washi support and nishiki-e technique remain consistent with standard mid-Meiji commercial woodblock production, adapted for the smaller format typical of educational series as opposed to the ōban sheets of his landscape and war print work.
