Description

A variant impression of the Kudanzaka May Night composition, this print records a different print run or state of the same design. Kudanzaka, running through the Kudan district of central Tokyo, was a prominent landmark visible from considerable distance, and its association with the Yasukuni Shrine gave it particular resonance in early Meiji print culture. Kiyochika's depiction of the slope on a May night would have emphasized the intersection of traditional urban topography with Meiji modernization — the road itself may have been gas-lit, and the surrounding neighborhood was undergoing rapid transformation. The May setting allows for soft spring foliage and the atmospheric haze typical of the season. In comparing the two recorded states, differences in the bokashi gradations of the sky, the density of tree forms, or the treatment of light sources would distinguish this impression from its companion, reflecting the inherent variability of the woodblock printing process across editions.
