Description
This print depicts the hexagonal teahouse (六角茶屋) at Ueno, a specific architectural landmark within the park grounds that served as a rest stop for visitors. Octagonal and hexagonal garden pavilions were common features of Japanese temple and shrine precincts, and the Ueno teahouse continued this tradition within the newly established public park. Kiyochika's composition would have used the distinctive geometric form of the hexagonal structure as a focal element, with trees and the atmospheric treatment of light providing surrounding context. As a second impression of the same subject as kobayashi-kiyochika--30, differences between the two may involve adjustments to the color of the teahouse, the density of the surrounding foliage, or the quality of light falling across the scene. The subject placed Kiyochika's kōsen-ga approach in dialogue with traditional architecture.
