Description
「上野公園内之景」 — Scene Inside Ueno Park — depicts the park established on the grounds of the former Kan'ei-ji temple complex in 1873, one of Tokyo's first public parks and the site of the first National Industrial Exhibition in 1877. This composition likely shows figures strolling through the park grounds against a landscape of trees and perhaps the distant structures of the hill, rendered with Kiyochika's characteristic attention to atmospheric light. Ueno held deep significance as a site of recent historical violence — the 1868 Battle of Ueno had destroyed much of the temple complex — and its transformation into a modern public park embodied the Meiji government's project of urban and civic renewal. Kiyochika's view captures this transformed space during its new life as a site of leisure and public culture.
