Description

"Imado Summer Moon" depicts the Imado district of eastern Tokyo, situated along the west bank of the Sumida River near the mouth of the Kiyosumi area. Imado was known for its pottery kilns and for teahouses along the riverfront. A summer moon scene (natsu tsuki) is a canonical subject in Japanese poetry and visual culture, and Kiyochika's treatment would have subordinated the topographic specificity of the location to the atmospheric effects of moonlight on the river surface and its surrounding landscape. The composition likely presents a low horizon, allowing the moon to dominate the upper register while its reflection organizes the water plane below, with the riverbank structures — kilns, teahouses, or wooden piers — providing mid-ground silhouettes. Graduated bokashi in the sky transitions the deep indigo of night toward the luminous field around the moon, a technique Kiyochika deployed with particular sophistication in his riverine nocturnes. The Sumida River district appears frequently across his oeuvre.
