Description
This print depicts the Hashiba ferry crossing on the Sumida River at dusk, capturing the transitional light of early evening — one of Kiyochika's favored temporal subjects. Hashiba was a traditional ferry point in the Shitamachi area of Tokyo, and the composition would show the low-lying riverside with ferry boats or their lanterns reflected in the darkening water. Kiyochika's bokashi treatment of the twilight sky — ranging from residual warm tones at the horizon through deepening blue-grey overhead — is central to the print's effect. The ferry setting allowed him to juxtapose the movement of boats with the stillness of the wide river surface, producing reflections that function as a second compositional layer. The print belongs to his sustained investigation of the Sumida River and its banks.
