Description

This print shows the Hyapponguai — a cluster of pilings along the Sumida River at Ryōgoku — at dawn, one of the recurring subjects in Kiyochika's atmospheric exploration of Tokyo waterscapes. The Hyapponguai were wooden stakes driven into the riverbed near the Ryōgoku bridge to prevent boats from approaching too closely, and their clustered forms rising from dark water provided Kiyochika with an unusual vertical motif. In the dawn light, the sky transitions through bokashi gradations of grey and pale amber, with the pilings rendered as dark silhouettes. This composition, which exists in variant states, demonstrates Kiyochika's engagement with liminal hours and the way diffuse early morning light dissolves architectural and natural forms into atmospheric suggestion.
