Description
This print depicts Kudan Slope (Kudanzaka) on a May night, capturing one of Tokyo's significant landmarks during a transitional moment in the city's history. Kudanzaka was the site of the Yasukuni Shrine, established in 1869, making it a charged location in the early Meiji cityscape. A night scene in May — the month of young summer foliage — would have offered Kiyochika the opportunity to render freshly leafed trees under moonlight or gaslight, their forms rendered with soft luminous halation characteristic of his kōsen-ga style. Gas lamps, introduced to Tokyo streets in the 1870s, appear frequently in Kiyochika's nocturnal compositions as focal points of artificial light. The slope's gradient and the contrast between the illuminated road surface and the surrounding darkness would have structured the composition, with light sources organizing the spatial recession. This is one of two recorded states of the Kudanzaka composition.
