Description

This impression of the Sumida embankment cherry blossom scene represents a second state or variant of the same composition depicted in kobayashi-kiyochika--41. Differences between states of Kiyochika's hanami prints can range from minor registration adjustments to significant alterations in the bokashi treatment of the sky or changes in figure coloring. The subject — flower viewing at one of Tokyo's most famous sites — carried considerable cultural resonance in the early Meiji period, when such traditional practices continued even as the physical landscape of the city transformed around them. Kiyochika's pictorial approach treated these scenes not as timeless customs but as specific atmospheric moments, anchored in the particular quality of light on a given spring afternoon or evening. The two states together illuminate how the print workshop revised compositions for successive printings.
