Description

Makurabashi (枕橋, Pillow Bridge) crossed the Sumida River in the Mukōjima district, linking the city's eastern edge to the approach toward Asakusa. A view from or toward this bridge would frame the river, embankment, and architectural elements in a composition that gave Kiyochika opportunities to explore reflected light on water and the silhouetting of bridge structures against a luminous sky. The Mukōjima bank was associated with cherry blossom viewing and riverside leisure, though Kiyochika frequently depicted such sites at unusual hours or in atmospheric conditions that emphasized transition over recreation. Bridge subjects allowed him to introduce geometric architectural form as a counterweight to the soft, diffused lighting effects rendered through bokashi in sky and water areas. The print likely shows figures on the embankment or in small craft on the river, their scale emphasizing the open breadth of the Sumida at this point.
