Description
Translating as 'Distant View of Ichinohashi from the Ōkawa Riverbank,' this print takes the Sumida River (Ōkawa, 'great river') as its setting, with Ichinohashi bridge visible in the middle or far distance. This compositional strategy—locating a bridge as a receding element rather than a foreground subject—allowed Kiyochika to study aerial perspective and atmospheric depth in a manner consistent with his interest in Western pictorial conventions. The riverbank foreground likely features moored boats, bare trees, or low vegetation that frames the view toward the bridge. The tonal transition from the near bank through the water surface to the far shore and sky would have required precise bokashi gradations, and the distant bridge provides a structural anchor for the otherwise open composition. This print belongs to Kiyochika's extensive series documenting the Sumida's bridges, embankments, and moods across seasons and times of day.
