Description
This nocturnal view of the Sumida River at Nakasu depicts a pyrotechnic or naval-demonstration explosion over the water. The title 水雷火 (suiraibi) refers specifically to torpedo or water-mine fire, suggesting a public military demonstration of the kind staged on the Sumida as Japan developed its modern navy during the Meiji period. The subject is ideally suited to Kiyochika's kosen-ga technique: bursts of orange and white light fragmenting across a dark river surface, with bokashi gradations rendering the deep blue-black of the night sky above. Reflections in the water below—broken and luminous—would demonstrate the indirect-lighting effects for which Kiyochika became recognized. The Nakasu sandbar area had historically been an entertainment quarter, and large crowds gathered for such events, providing opportunities to populate the riverbanks with silhouetted figures. This print belongs to his extended engagement with the Sumida River as a site for exploring artificial and atmospheric light.
