Description
「虎乃門夕景」 (Evening View of Toranomon) depicts the Toranomon district of central Tokyo at dusk, a subject that gave Kiyochika full scope for his atmospheric treatment of transitional light. Toranomon — meaning 'Tiger Gate' — was a landmark area in the Meiji capital, and an evening view would have captured the district at the moment when gas lamps or early electric arc lights began to assert themselves against the fading natural light of dusk. This interplay between artificial and residual daylight defines Kiyochika's most ambitious compositions in the kōsen-ga genre. The western horizon sky, rendered through graduated [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) from amber through deep blue, would contrast sharply with silhouetted architectural forms and the warm point sources of artificial illumination below. As one of Kiyochika's early print subjects, this composition demonstrates his departure from the topographic documentary convention of the [meisho-e](/glossary/meisho-e) tradition in favor of a mood-driven, light-centered pictorial approach.
