Description

A second treatment of the morning sea at Ōmori, this print shares its subject with kobayashi-kiyochika--52 but likely differs in compositional emphasis, time of dawn depicted, or the season implied by sky and sea coloration. Kiyochika occasionally produced variant compositions on the same subject—exploring different lighting conditions, vantage points, or tonal approaches within a single locale. The Ōmori coastal flats offered visual variety across tides and times, with figures gathering shellfish at low tide or boats returning with morning catches. This version may shift the horizon placement, alter the density of cloud or mist, or emphasize different foreground elements such as wooden stanchions, beached boats, or shoreline vegetation. Taken together, the two Ōmori morning prints demonstrate Kiyochika's method of sustained pictorial investigation into the quality of light at a single location.
