Description

Translating as 'View of the Sea at Shinagawa,' this print depicts the coastal waters off Shinagawa, a former post town on Edo Bay south of the capital. By the Meiji era, Shinagawa had become an industrial and maritime hub, its bay punctuated by ships and reclaimed land. Kiyochika's seascape compositions characteristically treat water as a vehicle for light study, rendering the interplay between sky and sea through layered bokashi gradations on washi. The view likely encompasses distant vessels, perhaps a steam ship alongside traditional sail craft, against an expanse of open water under atmospheric conditions—overcast sky, morning haze, or the diffuse light of a coastal afternoon. Kiyochika's interest in tonal nuance rather than descriptive detail gives such marine views a contemplative quality that distinguishes them from earlier Hiroshige seascapes of the same bay.
