Description

「道灌山夕日暮」 (Sunset at Dōkan-yama) depicts the famous viewpoint at Dōkan Hill in what is now the Nishi-Nippori and Tabata district of northern Tokyo, recorded at the moment of sunset — a subject that allowed Kiyochika to deploy his full atmospheric and chromatic range. Dōkan-yama was historically a popular outing destination celebrated for its panoramic views, and it retained this association into the Meiji era even as the city around it transformed. A sunset composition from this elevated vantage point would encompass a wide horizon, allowing Kiyochika to render the graduated sky through layered bokashi from deep vermilion and amber at the horizon through increasing values of blue above. Silhouetted landforms, trees, or distant urban structures would anchor the composition below the luminous sky. This is among the more classically structured of Kiyochika's landscape subjects, combining a traditional meisho-e location with his fundamentally transformed approach to light and atmosphere.
