Description

From the 「花模様」 series, this print records a floral pattern characteristic of the Enpō era (1673–1681), a transitional period between the exuberant Kanbun style and the forthcoming decorative extravagance of the Genroku era. Enpō-period textile design shows increased sophistication in pattern repeat structure and a growing interest in subtler ground treatments. Floral motifs of this moment often appear in flowing, naturalistic arrangements — irises along water, autumn grasses, or blossoming branches — that reflect both seasonal sensibility and the refined tastes of an increasingly prosperous urban merchant class. Kiyochika's rendering documents one such design, fixing a specific pattern vocabulary to its historical moment within the series' survey. The Enpō entry bridges the bold early-Edo aesthetic and the ornate Genroku peak that follows in the sequence.
