Description

From the Hana Moyō series, this print illustrates women's fashion of the Tenmei era (1781–1789), a period associated with refined elegance and the mature bijin-ga tradition of Utamaro and his contemporaries. Tenmei-period women's wear featured elongated silhouettes, delicate color harmonies, and the emergence of lighter, more transparent fabrics worn in layered combinations. Kiyochika renders these refinements with attention to the specific palette of the period—pale lavenders, grayed greens, and soft saffron—alongside the characteristic obi styles and hair arrangements of the late eighteenth century. The Tenmei era represented a cultural high point in urban Edo life before the Kansei Reforms imposed stricter controls, and its fashion served as a touchstone for Meiji nostalgia about the refined aesthetics of the preceding century.
