Description

A second print documenting Bunka-era (1804–1818) floral pattern design in the 「花模様」 series, this entry presents an alternate design from the same period of late Edo cultural maturity. The pairing with a companion print under the same era title suggests the series sought to convey the variety possible within a single period's design conventions rather than canonizing a single representative example. Bunka-era pattern design reflects an accumulated decorative sophistication: geometric underlays combined with organic floral overlays, seasonal motifs rendered with botanical precision, and a palette refined by generations of dye development. This print and its companion together offer a nuanced picture of the Bunka decorative field that neither alone could provide. As one of the most recent historical periods in the series, this design would have been within living memory for some of Kiyochika's contemporaries at the time of publication.
