Description

The second Hana Moyō print depicting the Tenpō era (1830–1844) offers either a variant composition or a companion image to kobayashi-kiyochika--251 within the same historical fashion series. The existence of two prints for this period within the series may reflect the richness of Tenpō-period fashion as a subject, or may represent distinct aspects of women's dress—outdoor versus indoor costume, formal versus informal wear, or contrasting social registers. The Tenpō era's sumptuary restrictions produced a countervailing emphasis on subtle textile sophistication, and Kiyochika's careful rendering of weave structure, pattern repeat, and color combination would distinguish the two prints as independent statements on the period's aesthetic. The bijin-ga format places the figure at compositional center, framed by minimal background elements.
