Description
This print shows the bridge over the pond at Takinogawa, a district in northern Tokyo known for its scenery and traditional gardens. The title 「滝の川池の橋」 — Bridge at Takinogawa Pond — places the composition squarely in the meisho-e tradition of named-place landscape prints, though Kiyochika's approach diverges sharply from that of his predecessors. Rather than the schematic topographic clarity of Hiroshige, he would have used tonal washes and careful bokashi to convey light filtering through foliage or reflecting off still water. Takinogawa's gardens and pond made it a popular excursion destination during the Meiji period. The bridge as a structural element crossing the reflective surface of the pond gives the composition a natural horizontal-vertical tension, characteristic of Kiyochika's urban and peri-urban landscape work from the late 1870s.
