Description

A variant state of the Ariake-rō at Imado composition, this impression preserves a different moment in the print run from its companion. The Ariake-rō was a riverside establishment whose name — suggesting the pale light of dawn over the river — would have appealed directly to Kiyochika's practice of depicting transitional lighting conditions. In comparing the two states of this composition, differences in the treatment of sky gradations, the rendering of the water surface, or the articulation of the building's exterior would reveal the subtle variability introduced by the printing process itself. The Imado district, slightly downstream from the more celebrated Asakusa area, offered Kiyochika a less iconographically burdened setting than the major Edo landmarks, allowing him to focus on atmospheric observation rather than topographic recognition. The print reflects his sustained engagement with the lesser-documented stretches of the Sumida River as sites for exploring the intersection of architecture, water, and changing light.
