Description
This print depicts the Ariake-rō, a teahouse or restaurant establishment at Imado on the Sumida River, and is one of two recorded states of the composition. The Ariake-rō ("Tower of the Pale Dawn") was a named establishment in a district known for riverside dining and entertainment. Kiyochika's view would likely have shown the building from the water side or from the riverbank, capturing the quality of light — dawn, dusk, or lantern-lit evening — suggested by the establishment's evocative name. The rendering of a specific commercial building distinguishes this print from purely topographic meisho-e, placing it within the tradition of named-venue prints that documented the entertainment districts of Edo and early Meiji Tokyo. Architectural details would be subordinated to the overall atmospheric treatment, with the building rendered in silhouette or soft illumination against a sky rendered in graduated bokashi. The Imado waterfront provided Kiyochika with recurring material throughout his landscape print series.
