Description

Like its sibling entry, this print is catalogued only as a sheet from an unidentified series, with the originating title not retained in current records. The loss of series context is not uncommon for Meiji-period commercial printmaking, in which single sheets were sold individually as well as in sets, and institutional collections sometimes acquired loose prints without their accompanying documentation. Kiyochika's output was substantial and spread across many publishers, contributing to cataloguing complexity. The woodblock print medium itself—built from hand-carved keyblock outlines and color blocks printed in sequence—remains identifiable regardless of series attribution. Without additional archival evidence, the print's subject, date, and place within Kiyochika's broader career must be assessed through stylistic analysis of the surviving impression.
