Description
Atago Hill (Atagoyama) was one of the few prominent natural elevations within the old city of Edo, topped by the Atago Shrine and offering panoramic views across the Shiba district toward Tokyo Bay. Kiyochika depicted this site during the Meiji period, when the surrounding landscape was undergoing rapid transformation with the introduction of Western-style buildings, telegraph poles, and railway infrastructure. His rendering likely employs the atmospheric tonal gradations characteristic of kosen-ga, using bokashi gradients to render the sky at dusk or dawn. The print captures the tension between the ancient shrine precinct and the modernizing city spreading below, a thematic preoccupation throughout Kiyochika's Tokyo series. The compression of near and far elements through careful manipulation of light and atmosphere distinguishes his treatment of topographic subjects from earlier Edo-period meisho-e traditions.
