Description
Bandaibashi — a bridge over the Ōkawa (Sumida) River at Honjo — is shown at dawn in this print, its title translating as "Sunrise at Bandaibashi." Kiyochika was among the first woodblock artists to treat sunrise over Tokyo's river crossings as seriously as the moonlit and nocturnal scenes more commonly associated with his name. The warm light of the rising sun catches the wooden bridge timbers and reflects in broken patterns on the moving water below.
