Description
This print depicts the Benkeibori canal and its surrounding open ground near Sakurada Gate in central Tokyo, a district undergoing rapid transformation in the Meiji era. Kiyochika characteristically employs atmospheric gradations of light — likely rendered through careful bokashi printing — to convey the mood of the site, perhaps at dusk or under overcast skies. The composition balances the horizontal expanse of the canal with vertical elements of trees or embankment. The moat area adjacent to what had been Edo Castle carried both historical resonance and immediate relevance as the old feudal topography of the city gave way to new administrative and military use. The print belongs to Kiyochika's series of Tokyo views from the 1870s and early 1880s, which documented the city's changing face through the lens of Western-influenced tonal rendering applied to Japanese woodblock technique.
