Description

This kacho-e (bird and flower print) places a bird among cherry blossoms, situating Kiyochika within a genre with deep roots in Chinese and Japanese painting traditions. The subject — typically a small passerine perched on a flowering branch — allowed printmakers to demonstrate delicate color gradation in the rendering of petals and subtle differentiation of feather texture. For Kiyochika, the kacho format offered an opportunity to apply his characteristic light-shadow treatment to natural subjects: the backlit translucency of cherry petals against an atmospheric ground, and the precise silhouetting of the bird form. Bokashi gradations in the sky or background would establish tonal depth. Cherry blossoms (sakura) carried seasonal and cultural weight for Meiji-era audiences, and their appearance in prints signaled spring and the transience of beauty. The descriptive title suggests the work is identified by subject rather than a series title.
