Description

A further impression of the Yingkou encampment composition from 1895, this print documents the same First Sino-Japanese War subject as the related works in the series. Variations between impressions of Kiyochika's war prints often reflect the commercial pressures of rapid production: blocks carved and printed in close succession show progressive wear, while some editions may have been produced by different workshop teams working from the same design. The composition places Japanese soldiers in a barren winter landscape, communicating the physical toll of the Manchurian campaign through visual means that newspapers could not replicate. Kiyochika's war print output numbered roughly one hundred designs for the 1894–95 conflict alone, making him the most prolific senso-e artist of that war. This impression contributes to the documentary record of how that conflict was visualized for the Japanese public during the Meiji period.
